for undergraduate students:Math Circle MAT 197
Learn to design and teach interesting math! MAT 197Undergraduate Math Circle participants register for MAT197 for 3 units of credit (P/NP). (Students who don't have upperclass status register for MAT97.) The course is a weekly seminar, meeting at a time to be determined. The associated CRN is will be available to appicatnts soon. As part of the seminar, undergrads will assist our graduate student instructors during the Saturday workshops. By the end of the quarter, MAT 197 students will have taught the high school Saturday workshops and a module of their own design to a junior high school class. Through the weekly seminars, undergrads will improve their expository and presentation skills. Few undergrads have a chance to teach a workshop of their own design; our undergrads are not only given this chance, they will also be mentored through the process by graduate students chosen for their dynamic teaching ability and research potential. EnrollmentEnrollment is based on instructor approval. Because we want our students to get as much as possible from their graduate student mentors, we are restricting the number of students in our class to six students. Enrollment for MAT 197 in Winter 2008 has closed. However, if you think you may be interested in joining MAT 197 for Winter 2009, we strongly encourage you to contact us. Homework AssignmentsClick here for homework assignments Each homework assignment contains three portions, all written. The third portion is a guided interview with your graduate student instructor. Take good notes in your notebook! The answers will help you in completing next week's first two portions of the homework. Then first two parts are due before your instructor interview. They ask you to reflect about the material and how the material was taught, and will help you get more out of your interview with your instructor. |
